Mental Health and Youth
Mental Health and You!
Did you know that 1 out of 5 teenagers has a mental health problem? And, that most teenagers don't get the help they need, when they need it?
Why is that? Some people don't look for help because they are afraid, others because they don't know how or where to look for help, and for others it's stigma that gets in the way.
What do we mean by stigma? Well, stigma is the way our society can sometimes label people. You might have heard it in terms of discrimination against someone if they are a certain color, gender, sexual orientation, or nationality. Well stigma also can also be a factor if someone has a problem or an issue - like a mental health issue. So it's a feeling we get - that having a mental health issue is "not good". But these old ideas are changing fast. And we ask you to break down the walls of stigma.
